Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show.  Today’s question comes from Tanya and she wants to know ‘why is my skin always dry?’

It is a common problem actually and there are some skin types that are more prone to getting dry.  In particular, you will know if you’re this skin type if you have lots of cracks on your palm.  So they are the individuals that are more prone to skin rashes, drying and eczema.  You will be particularly effected by your environment including air-conditioning in your work environment.  So, do have a look if you are sitting underneath an air-conditioning vent or if you are constantly being bombarded with cold dry air it may be affecting your skin moisture.  Do obviously drink more water if you are in that environment.  Keep topping up with water as that may also help to alleviate the dryness of your skin.  Essential fish oils, omega 3 fish oils, can help with dryness as can Vitamin E as well.  So those are two things that you may be able to take orally that can benefit your skin on the outside.  Ultimately keep hydrated, keep moisturised, and hopefully that will reduce the dryness of your skin.  The last point that I have was about thyroid conditions.  If you have a thyroid condition you will end up with dry skin and dry hair.  Do have your thyroid tested especially if you have noticed a change in the way that your skin used to be to the way it is now.  So that’s a couple of tips to preventing dry skin.
