Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question is about food intolerances and what causes them and can hormone imbalance in particular cause food intolerances.

Food intolerances is a big topic and certainly something we can’t cover here. There are certain theories associated with food intolerances in the development of them, some say it is genetic, and others say that it’s an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. Others say it’s from taking antibiotics, from the oral contraceptive pill, or from stress and other environmental factors. Hormone imbalance can lead to food intolerances and in particular high stress levels, things that will elevate your estrogen levels can start to cause an imbalance of the good and bad bugs of the gut, and can cause issues with bloating and food intolerance like symptoms. So certainly something to have looked into as part of the full picture in the investigation of food intolerances, so yes hormone imbalances can cause food intolerances but it’s not the only cause there are other causes as well. That’s a bit of a complex one, it’s certainly an umbrella term something that needs to be looked into a little bit more by your local doctor or trusted health professional. Thanks so much for your question, if you’ve got any other questions please go ahead and ask them on drcris.com.au and I look forward to answering them in The Ask Dr Cris Show.
