Hi again, Dr Cris here with the Ask Dr Cris Show. The next question is about contraceptives for women and which is the best choice. Now this one is a very big question and there is lots of different options out there in Australia which varies slightly from other places in the world, although it is quite consistent amongst Western Countries, you have got options of hormonal treatment and non-hormonal treatment.
Hormone treatment is obviously the pill (the progesterone only or the combined estrogen/progesterone), the injection, the implant or the intrauterine device that is inserted obviously through a procedure and that can prevent pregnancy by you releasing a hormone or by just being present as a device. The non-hormonal contraception options are obviously things like abstinence, condoms and some people use things like the temperature method or the billings method which unfortunately do fail from time to time given that there are inconsistencies in women’s cycles.
Which one is best for you? It really depends, it depends on your hormones and it depends on your stage of life. Low dose is the way you want to go so the lowest effective dose possible to achieve the results that you want which is cycle control and contraception and the least invasive so often the pill is the most convenient way for women but if you don’t want hormones going around your system then it is a intrauterine device which is often recommended for women that have had a baby and it can be left in place for five years. It is really individualised and it is something that you can speak to your Gynaecologist or your local Doctor about and it has to suit you so it might be trial and error for a while. There is no right or wrong it is just about choosing the best option that has your best interest in mind.
Thanks very much for your question about contraception. It is certainly a big topic.
