Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question comes from Simon and he wants to know ‘how do I know if I am getting a good nights sleep?’ Great question and often people don’t realise.

You can buy devices that will measure your sleep quality like fitbits and those sorts of devices. They have a level of accuracy that will be able to tell you how many times you wake up. Gauge your quality of sleep by how you feel when you wake up in the morning. Do you feel refreshed? Do you feel like you have been hit by a truck? Or do you feel like you have actually had a good night’s sleep? If you don’t then either address the quality of sleep or the length of time that you are sleeping. The quality of sleep can be improved by changing your mattress obviously, your pillow, addressing snoring, which reducing caffeine and alcohol can help with that as well, and looking at how many time you are getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. If it is more than once it is disrupting your sleep too much and look at reasons for that. Is it too much water after a certain time of the day, is it too much alcohol or coffee or is it other issues like pelvic floor for women and prostate issues for men. So that is about the quality of sleep. The best judge of quality of sleep is yourself. If you are not feeling refreshed in the morning then you are not getting enough sleep or the quality of sleep is not adequate.

So thank you so much for your question and I look forward to answering more of your questions below. I hope that you are loving The Ask Dr Cris Show and if you would like to see more of The Ask Dr Cris Show please press subscribe.
