Hi everyone, Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris show. Today’s question is about evening primrose oil and is it a benefit for all women at all stages? Evening primrose oil does have some great benefits it has omega 3 oil and omega 6 in it and it certainly has been shown to reduce things like PMS, painful periods, as well as sore breasts before your period and can help with hormonal mood swings associating with the menopause transition. So it does have some benefits associated with it. Do get good quality and find a good quality product and pay a little bit more for it. Around 2 to 3 grams a day is needed and some women take it just two weeks before their periods due and during their cycle otherwise some women take it every day. So it can be of great benefit. There are no major contraindications meaning doesn’t interact with any other medication. You do have to be careful when you’re pregnant so it’s not recommended in pregnancy and/or is not recommended for children, but in other cases it certainly can be used, and it can be definitely a benefit for women during your cycle and preventing those hormonal mood swings and hormonal changes.
