Hi everyone, Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show.  Today’s question is a huge topic and it’s something that we see in the media a lot.  It’s something that as Australians we suffer from in great proportions and that’s diabetes.  So this question comes from Scott and he wants to know ‘how do I prevent getting type 2 diabetes?’

Great question!  There are a couple of tips that I have.  The first one is if you find that your body weight has crept up that’s going to put a great strain on your pancreas and cause insulin resistance. So in terms of diabetes prevention the best thing that you can do is lose 5% of your body weight. It doesn’t matter how much you’ve got to lose but just 5% is enough to shift you out of pre-diabetes into a normal glycaemic state, they call it, which is a non-diabetic state. So 5% of your body weight. So, if you are 100kg that’s 5kg so that is regardless of how much you have got to lose. The next tip that I have is to avoid having lots of spikes in your blood sugar throughout the day so make sure your eating consistent meals, low glycaemic index meals, so keeping your blood sugar levels stable. The third and final tip that I have to preventing type 2 diabetes is get a good night’s sleep. I know that sounds counterintuitive but people that don’t sleep well are more prone to getting type 2 diabetes.  So those are just three tips for preventing type 2 diabetes which is a big problem today.  Thanks Scott for your question.
