Hi everyone, Dr Chris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show.  Today’s question comes from Sue, she wants to know could I have an underactive thyroid?

This is a question I commonly get asked in the clinic, and yes you may have an underactive thyroid – it’s extremely common.   Some of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid include fatigue, weight gain, fluid retention, mental slowness, depression, thinning of your hair, dry skin, and interestingly you lose the outer third of your eyebrow – it becomes quite thin.   If you’ve got any of these symptoms you may in fact have an underactive thyroid.   The best way to have this tested is through your local doctor which involves a blood test.  Sometimes I go one step further and order a specialised test called a Reversed T3 test.   That tells me whether stress is impacting on your thyroid and leading to Pseudo Thyroid Symptoms.   An urine iodine test is also helpful, and iodine deficiency can lead to a thyroid illness as well.  So lookout for thyroid dysfunction as it is often missed, and can lead to a lot of problems.

Speak to you next week.
