Hi, Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question is about fluid retention. Someone is saying that since they turned 40 they’ve noticed that they have got a lot of fluid retention in their feet, in their face, they feel quite puffy.

That can be sign of hormone imbalance and hormones do change in our late 30’s early 40’s. Our progesterone levels can decline and our estrogen can increase and so we can retain more fluid and feel quite puffy in particularly at the end of the day, so rings get tight, feet get quite puffy as well. Some women choose to go on the pill to try and see if that solves the issue, some women choose a more natural approach and they might try different herbs like dandelion root, liver herbs, to see if that can help. There are some hormone balancing herbs that can help as well, as the broccoli extract and chase tree. So there are a few different options. It’s worth investigating certainly if you have noticed that it is a drastic increase overnight and that’s something that you’ve got to be concerned about it. It could be a sign of things like lymphedema which can be genetic, certainly something that medical issue and needs to be medical addressed. It can be a sign of liver or kidney trouble, so certainly do have it looked into properly have it investigated, don’t just assume it is hormones or assume it is just one of those things especially if it has happened overnight. So, fluid retention very, very common issue often some very basic things will help to solve the issue but it’s worth having investigated and properly looked into.
