Tips to Start the New Year as a Healthier You

By December 27, 2018Good Health

During the party and holiday season many of us don’t focus on our health. It is really easy to get caught up in the busyness of end of year parties and gatherings that we forget to look after ourselves. The result is facing the New Year feeling heavy, unhealthy, and exhausted. So how do we stay focused on our health during this party season?

Tip # 1 – Get Moving. Starting your exercise regime before the new year rolls around ensures that you are not focussing on a New Years resolution.  With statistics showing that less than 5% of people actually maintain their New Year’s Resolutions, this way you are likely to stay more focused with a goal in sight that is not a New Year’s resolution. Just 30 minutes a day most days a week will have a significant impact on our health and well-being.

Tip # 2 – Drink more water. Drinking 2–3 Litres of water a day or about 1 Litre for every 25 kg that we weigh. If you are not drinking this much water, trying increasing it gradually over a few days.  You can often drink more water if it is at room temperature.  Try to also drink consistently throughout the day by always keeping a bottle or jug filled with water.

Tip # 3Sleep. It is important to ensure that you are getting enough sleep.  Most adults need on average 7-9 hours sleep per night.  Make sure your room is cool, dark, and quiet – around 18–22 °C is considered the ideal, temperature as is a room that is pitch black, which encourages maximal melatonin production. A room that is quiet is also permissive for undisturbed sleep.

Tip # 4 – Eat a Rainbow a day Many of us do not eat enough different coloured fruits and vegetables and therefore are likely to be missing out on the different beneficial nutrients found in these.  Start by eating a large salad for lunch, a stir-fry for dinner, add plenty of vegetables to baked dishes, and even hide them in casseroles, bolognaise and even in muffins.

Tip # 5 – Rest.  Rest involves allowing our bodies and minds to be free from anxiety, worry and stress Over the holidays, take some time out for yourself so that you can start the New Year feeling refreshed and invigorated.

These tips will help you to get on track to be a healthier and happier you in the New Year.

Remember that better health is through simple habits.
