Hi everyone Dr Cris here with the Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question is very specific to a type of problem that women would be familiar with or many women would be familiar with and that is sore breast before your period. It is called mastalgia and it affects a lot of women. It can be every single cycle or occasional cycles for women that have been pregnant are obviously familiar with that during pregnancy. It is a sign of hormone changes and it can be a sign of hormone imbalance such as low progesterone. Things that will help include things like Evening Primrose Oil, some women find chaste tree or vitex as a herb can help them as well although that one there is generally not recommended when you’re on the oral contraceptive pill. If you are on the oral contraceptive pill or you have something called the Mirena or progesterone intrauterine device inserted and you’re getting sore breasts it might be that the dose of the pill is too high for you and you need to reduce that down and with the marina maybe something like the evening primrose oil might help you or chaste tree is well. So there is a very very common problem, it’s something which affects a lot of women and some women are quite debilitating and require pain medication or anti-inflammatories during that process. So it is hormone changes that cause painful breast before your period and it’s something which balancing your hormones may just help ameliorate so that a discussion to have with your local doctor and certainly something that you shouldn’t have to put up with from cycle to cycle.
