Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question comes from Pam and she wants to know ‘how do I lower my cholesterol levels?’ It is a good question and a common problem.

There are three parts to cholesterol. There is good cholesterol, there is bad cholesterol and then there is ugly cholesterol. These three factors can be changed mainly by our lifestyle. The good cholesterol can be increased by increasing good fats in your diet like oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and olive oil. The bad cholesterol can be reduced by minimising the amount of saturated fat in your diet. Now some saturated fat is good, don’t get me wrong, and there has been a lot of hype around the increase of saturated fat in your diet. Some of it is good and saturated fat comes from eggs, dairy and meat but keep in lean. Keep it to lean cuts of meat, no more than 6 eggs a week and really try and minimise your dairy so that it is not a huge component of your diet. The ugly fats are the trans fats. They are the heart attack fats. They are the fats that will clog your arteries. You want to avoid those at all costs. They are manmade and they were never meant to be in our diet. You can reduce trans fats by avoiding processed foods. They are in processed foods like biscuits, cakes and little crackers. They are in all the processed foods that you can imagine that come in packets.

So, keep your food fresh, keep it lean and your cholesterol levels should hopefully follow suit. I hope that you are loving The Ask Dr Cris Show and if you would like to see more of The Ask Dr Cris Show please press subscribe.
