Dr Cris here with The Ask Dr Cris Show. Today’s question comes from Suzie and she wants to know how do I avoid having to have a hysterectomy, she has been diagnosed with severe endometriosis, she has had her kids, and her suggestion was by her gynaecologist that the next step will be a hysterectomy and potentially hormone replacement given that she’s still young, she’s not near menopause age, and so she wants to obviously protect her bones from that perspective.

It is a good question, hysterectomies are not done as much as they used to in days gone by, and it really is the last resort so if that is the stage that things have gotten too it’s obvious that things have gotten quite severe. There are obviously other treatments for endometriosis along the way, there is herbal treatment, but really that is for mild symptoms so it is things like Indole Three Carbinol, Vitex, B6, P5P that will help to some degree and then you’ve got your medical treatments which are obviously the pill, the Mirena, all the non-hormonal intravudeal device, IUD and lastly the hysterectomy. Hysterectomies are done relatively risk free these days, a lot of them and done by laparoscopically keyhole procedures. They are relatively safe; surgeons do thousands of them in span of a year so they are very, very, common procedure. I think it’s worth having a discussion with your gynaecologist about all your options, and once you have explores all your options then deciding what really is best as well. Don’t be frightened to get a second opinion as well because medical advice varies depending on the practitioner and their area of expertise so obviously your gynaceolist I’m sure is excellent but if you seeking, if your needing that extra assurance, do seek a second opinion.

Thank you so much for your question and if you have any other questions please ask them below. I hope you are loving The Ask Dr Cris Show and if would like to see more of The Ask Dr Cris show please press subscribe.
